After conducting a careful analysis of the fundamental factors that allow for viewing the Northern Lights, Yellowknife emerged as the top choice. One of the main reasons for selecting it as the best location in Canada to admire the auroras is its proximity to the North Pole (1904 miles away). It also scored highly for its clear skies and excellent visibility.

The second place was taken by Cold Lake, Alberta, which from the study conducted, was the third city with the least light pollution. Fort McMurray in Alberta took third place, with the sixth-highest visibility score, and is the third-closest Canadian city to the North Pole.
On the other hand, St. John’s is the Canadian city with the least likelihood of observing the auroras, mainly because it ranks third in the most hours of cloudy skies and low visibility of all the cities studied.
The study also revealed the cities in each province that have the highest likelihood of seeing the auroras. The highest score was for Yellowknife, with 81/100, followed by Cold Lake, with 76/100, and then Whitehorse, with 74/100.
Interestingly, the report found that Yorkton in Saskatchewan, Thompson in Manitoba, and Kenora in Ontario have some of the highest hours of clear skies, which is a decisive factor in determining the possibility of observing the Northern Lights.
Cranbrook in British Columbia ranked first in visibility among the main cities in each province. Gander in NL, Baie-Comeau in Québec, and Cold Lake in Alberta were the three cities with the least light pollution.
Winter is usually the best time to see the Northern Lights (from December to March) due to darker nights and clearer skies. To further increase the chances, it’s advisable to go out between 10 pm and 2 am.
